BODY PIERCING AFTERCARE & OTHER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

>> Does it hurt?
Yes, but the procedure is less traumatic when performed by a trained professional. Anaesthetic is available for certain piercings on request, at an extra cost.

>> What sort of needles do you use?
Single use hypodermic and canula type needles, size depending on the piercing.

>> What are your hygiene standards like?
As strict as a hospital. Everything that touches your body is single use only, or has been sterilised by autoclave. All tools are stored in UV sterilization cabinets after autoclave sterilization. All waste is disposed of by a professional waste disposal company. Before any piercing, hygiene - as well as aftercare - procedures are explained and demonstrated. You are welcome to examine our work areas at any time.

>> What is your policy regarding age?
Please ensure you have a valid ID book. If you just look young, our compliments to you! Wildfire reserves the right to refuse services to people who cannot produce identification. Minors will only be pierced if they accompanied by a legal guardian - we will further try to dissuade any one under the age of 16 from getting pierced.

>> try a few sometimes bizarre questions that we have been asked

PLEASE BE AWARE

>> No cell phones, friends or family will be allowed into the piercing area, unless by special request

>> If you have diabetes, haemophilia, HIV, AIDS or any other contagious or infectious disease, you must inform the artist before they work on you. This will be treated with the upmost confidentiality.

>> If you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, please come back later. Wildfire reserves the right to refuse services to people deemed to be under the influence.

AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

These body piercing aftercare instructions are explained by the piercer before and after he/she does your piercing and also appear on the printed leaflet that is given to you. We are more than happy to repeat these instructions to you at any time, and answer any other questions you may have - either just phone, or visit our contact page and send us an email.

>> Clean your hands thoroughly before cleaning your piercings. Do not touch or fiddle with your piercings.

>> Surgical spirits is not to be used on any piercing. Prolonged use of surgical spirits can lead to keloids and unsightly scarring. A mild saline solution helps the pierced tissue to regenerate at its' own pace whereas surgical spirits is too strong and stunts healing.

>> Do not remove the jewellery when cleaning.

>> Infections are caused by touching your piercing with dirty hands or putting non-sterile jewellery into your piercing. When your piercing is infected, it will be exceptionally painful. The skin surrounding the piercing will appear red and hard. Due to swelling, the jewellery will begin to pull into the pierced skin. When touched, the piercing will excrete pus. If you are suffering from these symptoms, do not remove your jewellery. Contact Wildfire as soon as possible.

>> Your piercing may develop little bumps (resembling pimples) during the healing period. We call these bumps keloids. Keloids are caused by various factors e.g.. Nickel / copper allergies, awkward piercing placement or incorrect cleaning techniques. Contact Wildfire if keloiding occurs for us to diagnose and eliminate the cause.

>> If you ever experience radical swelling of the tissue surrounding a new piercing, please return to Wildfire as soon as possible.

>> Try to keep the initial jewellery in your piercing for the minimum healing period as listed below except for tongue, labret and lip piercings.

APPROXIAMATE HEALING TIMES (external piercings)

NAVEL/SURFACE/CARTILAGE/NOSE/BRIDGE: 6-9 months
NIPPLE/EYEBROW: 4-9 months
VARIOUS GENITALS: 2-5 months
EARLOBES: 1-2 months

CLEANING PROCEDURE (aftercare for external piercings only)

>> Saturate two cotton buds with saline solution. Flatten the tips of the cotton buds. Support the jewellery and remove any blood or plasma (yellow/white substance secreted by healing piercings which hardens) from the piercing.

>> Clean your piercing twice a day for the first month, thereafter, only when it weeps. Your piercing is supposed to weep - it is not a symptom of infection.

>> After approximately one week, your piercing could become inflamed and weep more plasma than before. This is normal.

APPROXIAMATE HEALING TIMES (oral piercings)

TONGUE/FRENUM: 1-2 months

CLEANING PROCEDURE (aftercare for oral piercings only)

>> Eat only soft foods for the first four days e.g. soups, yoghurt, mashed potato etc

>> Using a mouthwash, rinse your mouth after eating, drinking and smoking. It would be preferable to smoke as little as possible.

>> Reduce swelling by using an anti-inflammatory tablet e.g. INZA (available over the counter at all pharmacies). As an alternative, keep crushed ice in your mouth.

>> Expect your piercing to bleed randomly during the first two weeks. Your piercing will also weep plasma which, in the mouth, is a sticky yellow/white substance.

>> Do not exchange body fluids with strangers e.g. kissing for at least 8 weeks to avoid infections and various infectious diseases.

>> Return to Wildfire in a minimum of two weeks for a shorter bar to avoid damaging your teeth and gums.

APPROXIAMATE HEALING TIMES (external /oral piercings only)

LABRET/LIP/MADONNA/CHEEK: 4-9 months

>> Follow external and oral piercing aftercare cleaning procedures.

>> Return to Wildfire after a minimum of three weeks for a shorter bar/smaller ring to avoid damaging your teeth and gums.

Please remember that we are here to help. Do not hesitate to call or contact us if you have any queries.

Please follow these aftercare instructions as closely as possible.
